HMONG STUDENT ASSOCIATION BOARD 2018-2019
Meve burton
President
Hello! My name is Meve Paj Hnub Burton. I am currently a fourth year at UCI, majoring in Psychology & Social Behavior. The Hmong Student Association has played a prominent role throughout my college career. Growing up in a Hmong community and being away from home, I knew HSA would have a special place in my heart. Ever since I was a first year, the club has always been welcoming with open arms. Despite my busy college schedule, I knew HSA would always be a constant in my life. Therefore, being able to serve as HSA’s President is quite an honor. I’ve never had the time to serve on board for the past three years. As a result, I knew I would regret not taking a position before I graduate. With this, I took on the position as President to give back to an organization that gave and taught me so much. I grew a deeper appreciation and love for my heritage, and being able to share this among members is truly beautiful. Encouraging each other to become the best versions of ourselves and excel among the Hmong community is inspiring to watch. This association is a genuine home away from home, and I am excited for what this upcoming year will bring!

Marilyn Xiong
Secretary
"CONGRATULATIONS! First of all, I would like to congratulate you all for making it to the University of California, Irvine. This is a new beginning, a new chapter, in your journey that may bring tearful memories, happy memories, stressful memories, all types of memories, good or bad. To start off, my name is Marilyn, and I am the Secretary of Hmong Student Association. I hope as the years go on, we grow to learn more about each other and become great friends. In short, my goals I wish to achieve as a member on board is to make the atmosphere the absolutely most comfortable for incoming freshman like you. College can be a little scary, and at times a community, a home, is all we need to strive on. As part of board, it is one of my goals to make that goal effective for you all. Hmong Student Association not only does promote higher education, and emerging leader in the Hmong community, but we hope to provide a safe and encouraging environment for you all to accomplish your goals. If you have any questions, any doubts, we as HSA are all here to listen to you, so don’t feel afraid to reach out. From my experiences, I’ve received a wonderful helping hand from HSA that has led me to find my biggest supporters, my best friends, and a connection to my roots. Although we all may have different experiences, I hope you find a community in Hmong Student Association, and a second family like many of us. I look forward to seeing you. "

vedrik Xiong
Activities director
Hi I’m Vedrik Xiong a second year at UCI currently serving HSA as their activities director. I joined this organization as a freshman in hopes of re-connection with my Hmong Culture and in doing so I found a home in Irvine along with people I can resonate with. For that reason, In this up coming year I’ll make it my goal to expand the influence of HSA through memorable experiences and events. If you’re not Hmong and iffy about joining then don’t worry! We love sharing our culture and traditions and will happily incorporate you into our clan

Teresa Moua
Culture Show Chair
Greetings! My name is Teresa Moua, and I am a 2nd year at UCI studying business economics and apart of the Hmong Student Association as the culture show chair. My goal for HSA is to continue the legacy of the Hmong culture within UCI as well as spread knowledge of the Hmong culture to everyone through the annual culture show. The culture show is where we present a theme of the Hmong culture through skits, singing, dancing, and more. My position as culture show chair comes with the responsibilities of overlooking everything for the annual culture show from gathering actors/actresses to choosing a theme. Initially, I declined the position of culture show chair because I felt I was not well educated in the Hmong culture or ready to accept the responsibilities as I recently became apart of the club; however, after being apart of the culture show and observing the former culture show chair, I enjoyed the rewards of being apart of the culture show and HSA. Culture show is a great opportunity to bond with other members and to increase knowledge about the Hmong culture and community; this is how I was able to quickly transition into HSA and to know the other members. HSA is a second family to me here at UCI with amazing people who will give you a hand when you need it.

Nancy Xiong
Publicity chair
Hello everyone, my name is Nancy Xiong. I'm currently a third year at UCI majoring in English and emphasizing in Creative writing and also minoring in Asian American studies as well as Education. I've been a dedicated HSA members since I first came into college and although the previous year was a difficult time for me in the club, I continue to place my dedication to the club. Even though I started having doubts about the club, I felt that maybe I could be the change I felt it needed so I applied to be on board again. This year I plan to make some changes and hopefully connect more and think about just having fun and creating a comfortable environment for the new freshmen and for the past members. I want everyone to feel welcomed and to create a place where some people can feel like HSA is another family away from their actual family and that they feel as though they have a home away from home. I feel like creating this bond and creating an environment like this is important because I know that most of us in the club are away from home and this makes everything different. I totally understand this feeling because when I first came to college, I felt like a total loner until I joined the club. Everyone was so welcoming and so open minded and I hope that this continues beyond my years. If anyone is looking for a place to feel like they belong, HSA is the best place to be. And I will be here too haha.
